{"id":841,"date":"2018-06-28T14:15:38","date_gmt":"2018-06-28T14:15:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/melanogaster.ibb-csic.info\/gonzalez_lab\/?p=841"},"modified":"2018-11-09T16:44:34","modified_gmt":"2018-11-09T16:44:34","slug":"841-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/melanogaster.ibb-csic.info\/gonzalez_lab\/841-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Teach and Fly: a course for high school teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fourteen secondary school teachers from Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, Andaluc\u00eda, Arag\u00f3n and Catalunya participated on June the 28<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0in the course\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/melanogaster.eu\/?p=699\"><em>Teach and Fly<\/em><\/a>, which was organised by the Gonzalez lab. The course was aimed at providing these teachers some training on genomics and sequencing and editing techniques \u2015CRISPR\u2015 and most especially to encourage them to get involved in the citizen science project\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/melanogaster.eu\/\"><em>Melanogaster: catch the fly!<\/em><\/a>. Within this project, researchers, communicators, teachers, secondary school students and laypeople work hand in hand to find out how organisms adapt to changing environments. They do this by taking the fruit fly,\u00a0<em>Drosophila melanogaster<\/em>, as model organism.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The project kicked off in 2016. Since then, 60 students from Granada and Ciudad Real have sampled and classified fruit flies, and sent them to IBE so that its researchers can sequence them. \u201cWe hope that the course\u00a0<em>Teach and fly<\/em>\u00a0will enable us extend the network of secondary schools involved in the project and thus the sampling points\u201d, coordinator of\u00a0<em>Melanogaster: catch the fly!\u00a0<\/em>Josefa Gonz\u00e1lez says.<\/p>\n<p>Sampling is done in orchards by students, who catch the flies with an entomological aspirator. \u201cSampling is not a limiting factor anymore; thanks to their work, now we have samples from more places than we would have if we did the sampling ourselves\u201d, states Gonz\u00e1lez, who leads the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/melanogaster.ibb-csic.info\/gonzalez_lab\/\">Evolutionary and Functional Genomics<\/a>\u00a0lab at IBE. \u201cMoreover, by involving schools and the laypeople in our research, they get to know the cutting edge scientific research carried out in the country\u201d, she adds.<\/p>\n<p>The genomic sequences of the fruit flies are shared in international database. Therefore, data obtained within this project benefits all the labs in the European network\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/droseu.net\/\">European Drosophila Population Genomics Consortium (DrosEU)<\/a>\u00a0and the whole scientific community.
